Overview
Not a desktop sound card and not a USB dongle, this one slides into a notebook's PCMCIA slot. It brings hardware-accelerated game effects, surround decoding and recording features to a mobile machine.
Reason to buy is desktop-style audio features in a card that travels with the notebook, including game effects and low latency recording support. The limit is the slot itself, since newer laptops no longer have one, and the listing does not name an included accessory set.
Who it's for
A notebook used for games, movies or home recording that still has a card slot is the target. Anyone with a desktop, or a thin laptop without a slot, should choose a different kind of sound device.
Pros and cons
- Fits in a notebook card slot
- Low stated noise figure
- Surround decoding for movies
- Hardware accelerated game effects
- Needs a PCMCIA slot
- Box contents not listed
- Operating system versions not listed
- Output jack types not listed
Performance notes
Hardware acceleration handles game sound effects on the card instead of the laptop processor. The noise figure describes how clean the analog output is. A low latency driver path matters most for recording, so results depend on the software used.
