Overview
Backpackers who draw from both clear streams and murky ponds get two modes in the Katadyn Vario, set with one turn of a dial. Longer Life mode routes water through a ceramic pre-filter for silty sources, while Faster Flow mode speeds things up in clear water.
Switching modes to match the source protects the main cartridge on dirty water and saves time on clean water. The listing describes filtration only and makes no virus claim, so travel water may need extra treatment.
Who it's for
Hikers, campers and emergency kit owners facing both clear and silty water will make good use of the two modes. Ultralight hikers who prefer a squeeze filter will find it bulkier.
Pros and cons
- Two modes for clear or silty water
- Ceramic pre-filter is cleanable
- Carbon stage improves taste
- Fits Nalgene style bottles
- Virus removal not claimed
- Weight figures conflict in listing
- Bulkier than squeeze filters
Performance notes
Flow rate depends on the chosen mode: Faster Flow bypasses the ceramic stage, while Longer Life sends water through it to catch silt first. The glass fiber element does the fine filtering, and the carbon granules absorb tastes. Cleaning the ceramic disc restores flow as it clogs.
