Overview
The Midland GXT1000VP4 is a 2-pack GMRS two-way radio built for long-range outdoor use, with 50 channels, 142 privacy codes and a JIS4 splash-resistant rating. It is aimed at campers, hikers and worksite crews who need to stay in contact across open terrain.
The JIS4 rating means it can handle splashes and light rain, not submersion. The rechargeable nickel battery is a fixed pack rather than swappable AA or AAA cells.
- 50 GMRS channels with 142 privacy codes
- JIS4 splash-resistant rating
- NOAA weather scan and alert
- Rechargeable nickel battery pack included
Who it's for
Good for groups coordinating over larger properties, campsites or job sites who want more range than basic FRS radios and do not mind GMRS-band equipment. Less suited to anyone who wants to swap in disposable batteries on the go.
Pros and cons
- Long GMRS range for open outdoor terrain
- 50 channels plus 142 privacy codes cut down interference
- Built-in NOAA weather alerts and SOS siren
- JIS4 splash resistance for wet conditions
- Fixed rechargeable nickel battery, no AA/AAA option
- Real-world range drops with obstructions like hills or buildings
Performance notes
GMRS channels typically carry farther than FRS-only radios because they can use higher transmit power, which is what gives this pair its extended-range claim over open, unobstructed terrain; buildings, hills and trees still cut into that distance in practice. The 142 privacy codes work by filtering which transmissions the radio lets through on a shared channel, reducing chatter from other users rather than adding true encryption. Built-in NOAA weather scanning and an SOS siren add a safety layer for outdoor or remote use.
