Our verdict

A budget-friendly one-piece survival knife with a genuinely useful hollow handle, worth choosing for bushcraft and bug-out use rather than fine blade work.

Overview

The Cold Steel Bushman Bowie is a 7 inch fixed blade knife forged from a single piece of SK-5 high carbon steel, with a hollow Secure-Ex handle that stores gear and accepts a shaft extension. Built for bushcraft and survival use, not kitchen or everyday carry tasks.

  • 7 inch SK-5 high carbon blade forged as one piece
  • Hollow handle accepts a shaft extension or converts to a spear
  • Secure-Ex sheath includes a ferrocerium fire steel
  • Heat treated and tempered to RC54 for field durability

Who it's for

Bushcrafters, campers and bug-out-bag builders who want a tough, inexpensive fixed blade that can also serve as a spear point in a pinch. Not aimed at kitchen use, fine detail carving or anyone who wants a full wood or micarta handle.

Pros and cons

Pros
  • Light and inexpensive for a survival knife
  • Hollow handle stores gear or accepts a pole
  • Arrives sharp out of the box
  • Sheath includes a ferrocerium fire steel
Cons
  • Fit and finish varies between units
  • One-piece build means a hard, plain grip surface

Performance notes

The blade is ground to a thin edge and hand-honed, which is why it arrives sharp enough for skinning and slicing tasks straight from the box. Heat treating to RC54 keeps the steel tough rather than brittle, a reasonable tradeoff for a knife meant to be batoned or thrown rather than kept razor-fine for long stretches. Because handle and blade are one forging with no seams, there is nothing to loosen with use, but the tradeoff is a hard grip surface rather than a shaped wood or rubber handle.
