Overview
Play discs on a set that still takes composite cables. RCA builds the DRC79982 around RCA connectivity, so the player feeds a display through those jacks instead of an HDMI cable. Output is standard definition, which suits a spare room or an older television rather than a modern panel.
RCA connectivity is the whole point here: it matches the inputs on older televisions and secondary displays that newer players ignore. Output stays at standard definition, so a modern high definition set will not get a sharp picture from it. Read the media type line carefully before buying.
Who it's for
A second room, a guest bedroom or a basement set that still has the red, white and yellow jacks is where this player makes sense. A household with a modern panel and no composite input should look elsewhere. The listing gives no disc format list, so check what you plan to play.
Pros and cons
- RCA jacks match older television inputs
- Compact unit at just under three pounds
- Standard definition output suits small screens
- Simple single purpose disc player
- No HDMI output listed
- Disc format list not listed
- No streaming apps mentioned
- No upscaling stated
Performance notes
Output resolution is fixed at standard definition, so picture detail is capped no matter what disc goes in. RCA connectivity carries the signal to the display, and the player weighs little enough to sit on a shelf or stack on top of a set top box.
