Overview
A renter or a family with a shelf of DVDs gets a renewed (refurbished) Sony player that upscales discs toward HD on a full HD TV. It also plays CDs and burned discs with music and photo files, and the remote can run other brands of TV.
Sharper DVD playback on a modern TV for a small box is the core reason to buy. As a refurbished unit it carries a short replacement warranty, and the HDMI cable is not in the box.
Who it's for
Dorm rooms, guest rooms and families with older DVD libraries get a compact player for an HDTV. Movie fans who want Blu-ray or Netflix built in need a different player.
Pros and cons
- Upscales DVDs for an HDTV
- Plays MP3, WMA and JPEG discs
- Fast and slow playback with sound
- Remote controls other brands
- Renewed unit, not new
- HDMI cable sold separately
- No Blu-ray playback
- Short replacement warranty
Performance notes
Upscaling stretches the standard DVD signal to fit a full HD screen, so edges look cleaner but the detail is still limited by the disc. Fast and slow playback keep the sound running, which helps when hunting for a scene. Surround audio depends on a connected receiver or soundbar.
