Our verdict

A converter for feeding analog decks, consoles and cameras into an SDI chain that runs to Ultra HD. Buy it only if your gear and your switcher both speak SDI; it has no HDMI path.

Overview

A broadcast engineer with analog sources gets a converter that takes component, composite, S-Video and NTSC or PAL video in and puts it out as SDI. Signals enter on the analog side, leave on the SDI side, and the audio rides along through XLR connections, with the right XLR able to accept timecode instead. Settings and monitoring happen from the front panel or over ethernet.

The reason to reach for this unit is the audio and timecode handling that shares the same chassis as the video conversion, so a Betacam SP deck or a set top box can join a modern SDI facility without a rack of separate boxes. Its limitation is the output side: everything downstream has to accept SDI, and there is no HDMI connector anywhere on the unit.

Who it's for

Suits broadcast installations and portable racks where analog video sources still need to reach SDI gear, including remote management over a network. Buyers with a purely HDMI workflow should look elsewhere, since nothing here converts to HDMI and the analog inputs are the only way in.

Pros and cons

Pros
  • Analog video in, SDI out
  • Handles component, NTSC, PAL, S-Video
  • Balanced analog audio on XLR
  • AES/EBU digital audio on XLR
Cons
  • No HDMI input or output
  • SDI output only, no analog out
  • Rack mount hardware not listed
  • Front panel controls not listed as included

Performance notes

The conversion quality depends on the SDI output setting matching the source: composite and S-Video sources want the HD setting, while component HD sources want Ultra HD, and picking the wrong one is what softens or breaks the picture. Audio routing is decided by which XLR carries timecode, so the cabling plan matters as much as the menu. Ethernet management lets a rack be adjusted without walking to the front of the unit.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Teranex Mini Analog to SDI 12G convert SDI back to analog?

No. The signal path runs one way, from analog video in to SDI out. If you need to go the other direction, this unit is not the part for that job.

Can I use the right XLR for timecode instead of audio?

Yes. The right XLR can be configured for timecode input, on both the analog audio input and the AES/EBU digital audio input. That takes that connector out of audio duty while timecode is assigned to it.

What should the SDI output be set to for a composite or S-Video source?

Set the output to HD for composite and S-Video sources, and to Ultra HD for component HD sources. The SDI output is switchable between those settings, and the source type decides which one you want.

How many audio channels does the converter carry?

Two channels of professional balanced analog audio and four channels of 110 ohm AES/EBU digital audio, all over XLR connectors. The right XLR can be reassigned to timecode, which removes it from the audio count.
