Overview
The Smith's 51233 is a fillet knife with an 8 inch stainless steel blade, an overall length of 18.5 inches, and a listed weight of 1.75 lb. It includes a sheath with a pocket clip.
Fillet knives need a blade flexible enough to follow a fish's spine and bones, and Smith's lists an 8 inch blade here, a size that suits mid to larger fish. The pocket clip on the sheath is aimed at anglers who want the knife clipped somewhere accessible on a boat or belt rather than loose in a tackle box.
- 8 inch blade
- 18.5 inch overall length
- Stainless steel construction
- Pocket clip sheath included
Who it's for
Anglers who clean their own catch and want a dedicated fillet blade with a clip on sheath for quick access. Less relevant if you only need a small pocket knife.
Pros and cons
- 8 inch stainless steel fillet blade
- Includes a sheath with pocket clip
- Sized for mid to large fish
- 1.75 lb overall weight is on the heavier side for a fillet knife
- No handle grip material specified
Performance notes
Stainless steel holds an edge well and resists corrosion from fish slime and water exposure, which matters for a blade that gets used wet and put away wet between trips.
