A well-rounded Ultra HD Blu-ray player for a home theater with a modern TV and an older receiver. It is a disc player first, and streaming apps are better on a dedicated box.

Overview
Movie collectors with an Ultra HD TV get a Sony player that handles Ultra HD Blu-ray, regular Blu-ray and DVDs, scaling older discs up to the screen. Dual HDMI outputs split picture and sound for an older receiver.
Dolby Vision and HDR disc playback gives the full picture quality of modern discs. The second HDMI output lets an older AV receiver handle audio while video goes straight to the TV. The streaming side exists but is secondary to the disc playback.
Who it's for
Disc collectors pairing an Ultra HD TV with a receiver that lacks modern HDMI passthrough benefit from the split outputs. Streaming-only households gain nothing from a disc drive.
Pros and cons
- Plays Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD
- Dolby Vision and HDR10 support
- Second HDMI output for audio
- Upscales older discs
- Streaming apps not detailed in listing
- Only MP4 file format listed
- Heavier than slim players
Performance notes
Picture quality from older discs depends on the upscaler, which converts lower resolution sources to match the TV. HDR results follow the TV format support, since the player passes Dolby Vision or HDR to the screen. The separate audio output routes sound to a receiver that cannot pass Ultra HD video.
