Our verdict

A route for sending TV audio to an HDMI receiver when the TV and the receiver cannot talk over ARC on their own. It is HDMI only, so a system that needs a coaxial digital output has to look elsewhere.

Overview

A living room wall where the TV hangs and the receiver stands across the room is the setup this box was built for. Audio leaves the TV over its ARC or eARC port, the extractor pulls that audio out of the HDMI stream, and the receiver gets it on a plain HDMI input. Video continues to the display untouched, so the picture path stays the same while the sound path changes.

Older HDMI receivers often lack ARC or eARC, and that is the gap this box fills: the TV sends audio back down the HDMI cable, the extractor separates it, and the receiver treats it as a normal HDMI input. Compatibility is narrow, though. Both the TV and the receiver have to line up with what the unit expects, and the output side is HDMI only, so a receiver fed by coaxial digital cannot be connected at all.

Who it's for

Rooms where the display and the AV receiver are joined by HDMI but the receiver never handled audio return on its own. The unit also suits a setup where the TV passes Dolby Digital or DTS and the receiver decodes those formats. It does not serve anyone whose receiver or amplifier has no HDMI input, and it will not help a source chain that expects a coaxial digital jack.

Pros and cons

Pros
  • Extracts ARC and eARC audio from a TV
  • Passes 4K video at 60Hz
  • HDR and Dolby Vision pass-through
  • Handles Dolby Digital and DTS formats
Cons
  • No digital coaxial output
  • HDMI connections only
  • Compatibility depends on TV and receiver
  • Older receivers may need extra equipment

Performance notes

What comes out depends on the chain behind the box. The TV has to offer the audio format over its return channel, the extractor has to recognize it, and the receiver has to decode it, so a mismatch at any link changes the result. Video quality is governed by the pass-through path, which carries the signal rather than processing it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Orei HDA-927 work as a video converter or scaler?

No. It passes video through at up to 4K at 60Hz with HDR and Dolby Vision and does not change resolution or format. Its job is separating audio from the HDMI stream, not altering the picture.

Can I connect a receiver that has no HDMI input?

No. The unit has HDMI connections only and no digital coaxial output, so a receiver or amplifier without an HDMI input cannot be fed by it.

What audio formats can it pass to the receiver?

It supports ARC, eARC, Dolby Digital, DTS and LPCM over HDMI. What you actually hear depends on the source device, the TV settings and what the connected receiver can decode.

Do I need to check my TV before ordering?

Yes. The TV needs a compatible ARC or eARC port and the receiver needs an HDMI input. Older HDMI receivers or unsupported AV setups may need extra equipment or may not work at all.

What is in the box with the extractor?

The extractor and a USB cable. No HDMI cables, mounting hardware or remote are listed as included.
