Overview
A pass through converter that takes composite AV/RCA video, the yellow, red and white cables used by VCRs, DVD players and camcorders, and outputs it as HDMI for a modern TV. It also records to a USB flash drive.
This is aimed at people with older analog sources, VHS tapes, camcorder footage, retro game consoles, that a current TV cannot accept directly since most sets dropped composite inputs. Rather than just passing the signal through, the 2.0 version can also save what it converts as an MP4 file straight to a USB drive, turning it into a basic digitizing tool as well as an adapter. It works one direction only, from AV into HDMI, and will not take an HDMI source and turn it back into composite.
- Composite AV/RCA input to HDMI output
- Records to USB flash drive as MP4
- Upscales to 720p or 1080p
- Mic input for audio overlay
Who it's for
It suits anyone reconnecting an old VCR, camcorder or retro console to a TV that no longer has composite inputs, or trying to save VHS tapes to digital files. It is not a fit for someone needing HDMI to composite in the other direction.
Strengths and trade-offs
Drawn from this product's published specifications.
- Converts old composite AV sources to HDMI
- Records straight to USB as MP4
- Works with NTSC and PAL sources
- One direction only, AV to HDMI, not the reverse
- Needs a working VCR or camcorder as the source
Performance notes
Video enters through standard composite AV jacks and leaves as HDMI, upscaled to 720p or 1080p depending on the setting chosen, with support for both NTSC and PAL sources. A microphone input allows narration to be layered onto a live pass through or a recording. Recording saves directly to a USB flash drive as an MP4 file rather than requiring a computer in the loop.
