Overview
This is a 40 pound bag of Dr. Elsey's kiln-dried pine litter, sold as model 405453. The pellets are pure pine wood with no added dyes, and the manufacturer lists a litter box use warranty on the bag.
Pine litter works differently than clumping clay: dry pellets absorb urine and slowly break into fine sawdust as they take on moisture, and the wood's own oils handle odor rather than a perfume additive. At number 172 in Cat Litter, this listing sits well down from category leaders, so it has less of a track record than bigger clumping brands.
- 40 lb bag
- Kiln-dried pine pellets
- No added dyes or fragrance
- Model 405453
Who it's for
Fits owners who want to move off clay and scented litters and don't mind sifting sawdust out of the box instead of scooping clumps. Multi-cat households will burn through a 40 lb bag faster and may want to buy two at a time.
Pros and cons
- Pure pine wood with no added dyes
- Kiln-dried for a firmer, lower-dust pellet
- Large 40 lb bag suits multi-cat homes
- Listed with a litter box use warranty
- Pellet form means sifting, not clumping cleanup
- Cats used to clumping litter may need a transition period
Performance notes
Kiln-drying pulls moisture out of the pine before bagging, which is what keeps the pellets firm and lower-dust in the bag rather than crumbling early. Once wet, the pellets soften and break down, and that texture change is the litter's built-in signal that a section needs sifting out.

Frequently asked questions
Is Dr. Elsey's Pine litter scented?
No perfume is added. Any scent comes from the pine wood itself, which is the source of its odor control.
How is this litter different from clumping clay?
It is a pellet, not a powder. The pine pellets break down into sawdust as they absorb moisture instead of forming clumps you scoop out whole.
How big is the bag?
It is a 40 pound bag, model 405453, sized for households going through litter quickly or with more than one cat.
