Our verdict

A compact region-free player for a disc collection that spans several regions, with HDMI upscaling and a USB slot for files. It will not play Blu-ray discs, and the USB port only reads FAT32 drives.

Overview

Play DVDs from any region on a set that still has a disc tray in the house. The player reads every DVD region and both NTSC and PAL discs, sends the picture to a TV or projector over a single HDMI cable, and upscales it to Full HD. A USB port handles music and photo files from a flash drive, while RCA and coaxial outputs cover older sets and surround receivers.

The limits are format and file system: Blu-ray discs are out, and the USB port reads only FAT32 drives, so a large NTFS stick will not mount.

Who it's for

A movie collector with discs from Europe, Asia or older US releases gets playback without a second deck. Someone building a Blu-ray library or planning to run media from a large NTFS hard drive should look elsewhere, because neither works here.

Pros and cons

Pros
  • Plays discs from all six DVD regions
  • Upscales video to Full HD over HDMI
  • Reads NTSC and PAL discs
  • USB port for MP3, WMA and JPEG files
Cons
  • No Blu-ray disc playback
  • USB reads FAT32 drives only
  • Coaxial cable not included
  • No streaming apps built in

Performance notes

Disc reading relies on error correction and anti-shock buffering, which smooths over light scratches and small vibrations during playback. The HDMI stage handles the upscaling to Full HD, while the coaxial output passes multichannel audio to a receiver when the TV speakers are not enough. USB playback depends on the drive being formatted FAT32, so the file system decides whether a stick is recognized at all.

Frequently asked questions

Will the Nodrax FlexaPlay play a DVD bought in another region?

Yes. The player is region free and reads discs from regions 1 through 6, and it handles both NTSC and PAL video, so imported discs do not need a separate deck.

Does this DVD player support Blu-ray discs?

No. Blu-ray Disc playback is not supported, and DVD-copy discs will not play either. The supported media are DVD, DVD+R/R DL, DVD+RW, DVD-R/R DL, DVD-RW, SVCD, VCD, CD, CD-R and CD-RW.

What cables come in the box with the Nodrax FlexaPlay?

The box includes an HDMI cable and an RCA cable along with the remote control and user manual. A coaxial cable for the digital audio output is not included, so that connection needs a separate cable.

Can the FlexaPlay send surround sound to a receiver?

It offers a coaxial digital audio output for multichannel surround, and the surround configuration covers 2 and 5.1 channels. The coaxial cable itself is not in the box.
