Base coats and top coats are the clear layers that sit under and over nail polish. A base coat helps polish grip and keeps pigment from staining the nail, while a top coat adds shine, speeds drying on some formulas and protects the colour from chipping. Some products combine both roles, and there are specialist types such as ridge filling bases, strengthening bases and quick dry or gel effect top coats. The first decision is which problem you want to solve.
If your polish chips within a day or two, a good base and a fresh top coat every few days usually help more than changing the colour. If your nails peel or have ridges, a ridge filling or strengthening base evens the surface. If you want a gel like shine without a lamp, a gel effect top coat is the simple route.
Compatibility is the next question. Regular base and top coats are made for air dry polish, while gel systems need gel base and top coats cured under a lamp; mixing the two leads to peeling or a sticky finish. Quick dry top coats can shrink at the tips if applied too thickly.
Before buying, check whether the product is a base, a top coat or a two in one, whether it is meant for regular or gel polish, and the size of the bottle. Store bottles closed and upright, and thin layers dry faster and harder than thick ones.
