The first decision is size and shape, because a full tree that looks perfect in a showroom can overwhelm a small living room, while a slim or pencil tree fits a corner or apartment.

Measure the room height and leave space for the topper and stand, then measure the floor space, since tree width at the base varies widely between models of the same height. Among the 12 products that list item weight, most fall between 0.9 and 22 pounds, and 10 pounds is typical. Heavier trees usually have more tips and branches and look fuller, but they take more effort to assemble and store.

Pre lit or unlit is the next choice. Pre lit trees save hours of stringing lights, and many offer warm white, multicolour or switchable lights. Check whether the lights are connected through the trunk so sections plug together automatically, and whether one failed bulb affects the rest. Unlit trees let you choose your own lights and are easier to fix.

Realism and setup come next. Trees that combine moulded tips with flat needle tips look more natural, and hinged branches drop into place, while hook on branches take longer. Flocked trees look snowy but shed some flocking.

Before buying, check the height and base width, the number of tips, whether lights are included and their colour and type, the stand material, the storage bag or box, and the warranty on the lights. Keep trees away from heaters and fireplaces, and check cords for damage each year. Trees with a remote or foot pedal switch are easier to turn on behind furniture, and many owners add a skirt or collar to hide the stand. Measure your storage space too, since a large tree's box can be bulky.
