Start with the intended display position: a tree placed among mantel decorations needs different proportions from one filling a floor corner, so establish the space available before choosing its decorative finish.

Compare the assembled height and widest branch spread with your display area, including clearance beneath shelves and beside objects that will stay in place. For a floor display, allow space for branches extending toward doors or walking routes. Use measurements taken with the branches arranged for display, since a photograph of tightly gathered twigs may understate the space needed after shaping. The base footprint matters separately from branch spread, especially on a narrow mantel where the branches might fit but the support would overhang. If dimensions describe the packaged tree, request the assembled measurements before deciding it fits.

Built-in lighting reduces the need to thread a separate light string through branches, while an unlit tree leaves that choice to you. For an illuminated tree, compare photographs of it switched on with your intended display, and read whether its effects are steady, changing or selectable. The light-color filter leaves brightness and available modes unresolved. If automatic shutoff matters, look for a timer and read its operating cycle. For hanging decorations, establish whether the branches are intended to support ornaments and whether weight guidance is provided; bendable twigs intended for shaping are not evidence of load capacity.

Before choosing a tree for a porch or garden, confirm that both the tree and its electrical components permit outdoor use, including any shelter requirements. For every illuminated version, identify the power source and whether the required batteries or adapter are supplied or sold separately. For storage, look for instructions on folding or detaching branches and protecting fixed decorations from crushing. Read the cleaning instructions for the foliage, branch finish and electrical parts before assuming that wiping with a damp cloth is permitted.
