Overview
Not a streaming speaker, this is a portable receiver with a tuning knob, band selector and retractable antenna. A tuning light comes on when a strong signal is found, and the back-light can be set to auto or constant.
The reason to buy is an easy introduction to shortwave listening with a reel antenna, earphones and a case included. The limit is size and power: it needs four AA batteries or the wall adapter, and the built-in speaker is small.
Who it's for
A traveler, a news follower or a hobbyist exploring international broadcasts can use the band selector and knob without reading the manual. Someone wanting preset memory, Bluetooth or loud room-filling sound should look at another kind of radio.
Pros and cons
- Wide shortwave coverage
- Back-light for night use
- Earphones and case included
- Battery or wall power
- Small built-in speaker
- Not water resistant
- Battery life not listed
Performance notes
Reception depends on the band chosen and the antenna length, and shortwave signals change with the time of day. Dual conversion helps separate stations that sit close together. The reel antenna extends the range on weak stations.
