An electronic tabla and manjira unit with preset thekas and MIDI. It is a sampler box, so it replaces the drums for practice rather than the feel of playing them.

Overview
Not a pair of hand drums, the Taalmala is a sampler-based box that plays traditional tabla patterns. It can simulate a live accompaniment effect and offers a variety of fill-ins, laggis and tihayis.
Treat it as a practice or accompaniment tool: preset thekas play on demand, and MIDI sockets link it to a keyboard synthesizer or computer. The listing lists the box contents as not included, and the titles use two model names.
Who it's for
Musicians who need a steady tabla track for rehearsal or small concerts will use the thekas and the live-accompaniment effect. Students learning strokes, or anyone expecting a real drum, should buy a drum set.
Pros and cons
- Many preset thekas
- Fills, laggis and tihayis
- MIDI in and out
- Simulates live accompaniment
- Model naming inconsistent
- Box contents unconfirmed
- Not a real drum
- Power source not listed
Performance notes
A sampler plays recorded tabla sounds through the preset patterns, and the live-accompaniment effect adds variation. The MIDI sockets let it connect to a keyboard synthesizer or a computer. Sound realism is described as amazing, but no sample details are given.
