Overview
Hiking over icy ground is the job these Kahtoola KTS crampons are listed for. The alloy steel traction pair comes in a medium-large size and is not meant for technical ice climbing.
The reason to buy is dependable winter traction from a maker of traction gear, sized for common boots. Steel resists wear. The limitation is that the listing offers no boot size range, spike count or binding details, and the sport type field mentions ice climbing.
Who it's for
Hikers facing hard-packed snow and icy sections will use the traction. Anyone planning vertical ice, or with boots outside the medium-large range, should check the fit and design details.
Pros and cons
- Alloy steel traction
- Made for winter hiking trails
- Three year warranty
- Medium-large size covers many boots
- Boot fit range not listed
- Spike count not listed
- Not for technical ice
- Binding style not described
Performance notes
Steel points bite into packed snow and ice, and the fit of the harness to the boot controls how securely they stay on. Steel resists wear but dulls on bare rock. Walking on rock damages the points quickly.
