Overview
Playing away from a computer is the point of this compact controller, which has its own speaker, onboard instruments and a battery. It also acts as a USB MIDI controller for a DAW on Mac or Windows.
The reason to consider it is the freedom from power adapters and cables, along with the built-in drum kits and instruments. The limitation is the mini key size and a spec sheet that disagrees with itself on the knob count.
Who it's for
Producers who sketch on the go, or who want headphone practice with built-in sounds, will use the speaker and battery. Pianists who need full-size keys, and buyers who care about exact controls, should check the details first.
Pros and cons
- Built-in speaker and sounds
- Velocity-sensitive MPC pads
- Software suite included
- Mini keys, not full-size
- Knob count listed two ways
- Needs a computer for DAW use
Performance notes
Velocity-sensitive keys and pads report how hard each is struck, and the onboard sounds respond to it. A battery runs the unit and speaker without a cable, and the headphone output allows quiet practice. When linked to a DAW, it acts as a plug-and-play MIDI controller.
