Overview
Akai Professional builds the LPK25 MK2 as a laptop-sized USB MIDI keyboard with velocity-sensitive mini keys. An arpeggiator and a short list of supported software make it a simple add-on for composing in a small space.
Small keys and a plastic body keep it light enough to carry in a bag. The two-octave range suits bass lines and melodies, but not two-handed piano.
Who it's for
Producers and students who write on a laptop, often on the move, get a portable keyboard with arpeggiator. Players wanting full-size keys, pads or knobs should consider a bigger controller.
Pros and cons
- Velocity-sensitive mini keys
- Many supported DAWs listed
- Very portable plastic body
- Mini keys limit piano technique
- No pads or knobs
- Width figures in listing disagree
Performance notes
Keys send velocity data, so playing harder changes the loudness of the software instrument. The arpeggiator turns held notes into patterns, which helps with quick ideas on the road.
