Overview
Arturia builds the KeyLab Essential mk3 as a keyboard controller with a complete bank of controls. A digital display shows the settings, and tight links to virtual instruments let it browse sounds in the supplied software.
Faders and encoders cover mixing and plugin control without a mouse, and the software suite gives a start. The case is plastic and wide, which matters for small desks.
Who it's for
Producers working in one of the listed DAWs get hands-on control of mixing and instruments. Pianists wanting weighted keys, or anyone short on space, should look at other designs.
Pros and cons
- Pads, faders and encoders on one unit
- Digital display for settings
- Five listed DAWs supported
- Wide body needs desk space
- Cable not listed in contents
Performance notes
Faders and encoders map to the DAW mixer and plugin parameters, and the display names each control as it moves. Velocity and pressure sensitive pads add expression to drum and sample playing.
