Overview
Not a wired camera tied to an outlet, the Nest Cam runs on battery and snaps onto a magnetic mount inside or out. It tells people, animals and vehicles apart, sends alerts through the Google Home app and lets you talk through its speaker.
Free smart alerts and easy installation make it simple to cover several spots. Longer history, continuous video and emergency calling require Nest Aware subscriptions.
Who it's for
Renters and homeowners covering doors, yards and rooms get flexible placement. Those wanting full time local recording should look at a wired system with storage.
Pros and cons
- No wiring needed
- Smart person and animal alerts
- Free event history
- Local backup during outages
- Subscription for longer history
- Power cable sold separately
- Requires Google Home app
Performance notes
Battery cameras record events rather than nonstop video, which stretches battery life. On-device intelligence sorts alerts by type. Wi-Fi strength at the mount spot decides live view quality.
