Foam sleeping mats are closed cell foam pads used under sleeping bags for camping and backpacking, and they are light, cheap and impossible to puncture. They differ from inflatable pads, which are thicker and more comfortable but can leak. The first decision is comfort against durability, because foam mats are firm and bulky but work in any conditions, while inflatable pads pack smaller and feel softer.
Insulation is the next question. A mat insulates you from the cold ground, which matters as much as the sleeping bag, and thicker mats with reflective coatings add warmth. Many hikers use a foam mat under an inflatable pad in winter.
Shape and packing come next. Folding accordion mats pack flat on the outside of a pack, while roll mats are cheaper but bulkier. Water resistant and waterproof foam does not absorb water.
Foam mats also protect the floor of a tent and the bottom of an inflatable pad from thorns and stones. In summer, a thin foam mat alone may be enough on warm ground, while in winter a thicker mat or two stacked mats keep cold from seeping in. Reflective coated sides placed upward return body heat at night. Foam mats are also handy for kneeling while gardening and as a sitting pad at lunch stops.
Before buying, check the length, width, thickness, weight, packed size and warmth rating if listed. Foam mats also make good sitting pads and protect inflatable pads from sharp ground.
