Overview
Not a squeeze bag or a straw, the Katadyn Pocket is a hand pump filter you work to push water through a ceramic element. The element can be cleaned and reused, and the pump draws from a source into your bottle.
Longevity is the reason to own one: the ceramic cartridge is rated for a very large volume and the guarantee runs for decades. Pumping by hand is slower and more work than gravity or squeeze systems, and the listing names only bacteria and protozoa.
Who it's for
Long distance hikers, expedition travelers and emergency kits benefit from a filter element that cleans and goes on working. People who want effortless gravity filtering or virus protection should look at other systems.
Pros and cons
- Ceramic element can be cleaned and reused
- Very large rated cartridge capacity
- Long guarantee period
- Manual, needs no power
- Virus protection not listed
- Hand pumping takes effort
- Box contents unstated
- Flow drops with dirty source water
Performance notes
Output depends on how fast you pump and how clean the ceramic surface is. As sediment builds up on the element the flow slows, and scrubbing the ceramic restores it. Cartridge life depends on the quality of the source water.
