Overview
Hanging a bag from a branch and letting gravity push water through the filter is how the Katadyn BeFree Gravity works. A hollow fiber membrane strains out bacteria, protozoa and sediment, and the soft flask rolls up flat when empty.
No pumping or squeezing means camp chores happen while the water drains on its own. The filter is cleaned by shaking or swishing, with no backflush tools. Its rated life is modest, and the listing does not claim protection against viruses or chemicals.
Who it's for
Solo hikers and small groups at backcountry camps can fill the bag, hang it and walk away. International travelers facing virus risk need a purifier, not this filter.
Pros and cons
- Hands free gravity flow
- Cleans by shaking, no tools
- Flask packs flat when empty
- BPA free materials
- Virus removal not claimed
- Short rated filter life
- Listing gives two different weights
Performance notes
Flow depends on how high the bag hangs and how clean the membrane is: silty water clogs the fibers and slows output until it is shaken clean. Filter life varies with water quality, so murky sources use it up faster.
