Overview
Not just a player and not a DVR with a tuner, this Sony is a DVD recorder and VHS deck in one chassis built for copying between formats. One touch dubbing moves tapes to disc or back, and HDMI upscaling sharpens playback on an HD set.
Two way dubbing in a single box makes archiving old VHS tapes to DVD a simple job. With no tuner, scheduled TV recording depends on a cable or satellite box feeding the line input.
Who it's for
People with boxes of home videos on tape who want them on disc without a computer. Viewers wanting a tuner based DVR or streaming should choose different gear.
Pros and cons
- One touch dubbing between VHS and DVD
- Records from a cable or satellite box
- HDMI upscaling for HD screens
- Pass through works with recorder off
- No built in tuner
- Remote and cables not listed
- Heavy for a set top unit
Performance notes
Copy quality depends on the condition of the source tape, since dubbing captures whatever the VHS deck reads. Pass through sends the set top box signal to the TV even when the recorder is off, so it does not interrupt normal viewing.
