Overview
Not a bare acoustic, the Takamine NEX cutaway pairs a spruce top and rosewood back and sides with an onboard preamp that adds a tuner, three band EQ and gain. The slim mahogany neck and cutaway open up the upper frets.
Plug in ready tone with real tonewoods is the reason to choose it for gigging and recording. The NEX body is smaller than a dreadnought, so it trades some low end volume for comfort.
Who it's for
Singer songwriters and worship players who plug in most nights will use the preamp constantly. Players who only strum unplugged and want maximum boom should look at a larger body.
Pros and cons
- Spruce top over rosewood body
- Preamp with tuner and EQ
- Cutaway reaches upper frets
- Slim, comfortable neck
- No case included
- Smaller body, less bass
- Body material listed two ways
Performance notes
Unplugged tone comes from the spruce top vibrating over rosewood, which adds deep lows and sparkle. Plugged in, the piezo pickup and preamp shape the sound, with the three band EQ trimming boom or harshness for the room.
