Overview
Seagate designed this desktop drive for simple storage: plug it into a Windows computer, it is recognized automatically, and files are dragged across with no software. A power adapter and USB cable come in the box.
Large capacity with no setup software makes it a simple place to park photo, music and film libraries. It also works as extra storage for a PlayStation. Mac users must reformat it first, and it needs an outlet nearby.
Who it's for
Students, families and small offices storing large libraries at one desk will fill it over the years. Travelers need a bus-powered portable drive instead.
Pros and cons
- No software needed on Windows
- Cable and adapter in the box
- Works with PlayStation consoles
- Compact desktop body
- Needs wall power
- Mac requires reformatting
- Warranty term not listed
Performance notes
Transfer speed is set by the spinning disk rather than the USB link, so large files copy steadily while folders of small files take longer. The drive spins at a moderate speed suited to storage rather than heavy editing. Keeping it on a stable desk protects the mechanism.
