Overview
PlayStation owners tired of deleting games get a portable drive that plugs into a console USB port and draws power from it, with no separate cable. The compact case matches the console look and slips into a bag for trips.
Room for a large game library without opening the console is why it sells, and setup takes a few guided steps. As a mechanical drive, it is slower and more fragile than an SSD.
Who it's for
Players with a large PlayStation library get space for many installs plus portability to a friend's console. Anyone who throws drives in a backpack daily should consider an SSD.
Pros and cons
- Large game capacity
- No power cable needed
- Plug and play setup
- Compact, travel ready size
- Mechanical disk, sensitive to drops
- Usable capacity may vary
- Only PS4 named in compatibility
Performance notes
Load times depend on the mechanical disk and the USB link, so games load at hard drive speed rather than SSD speed. Bus power from the console removes a power brick but requires a port that supplies enough current. Usable space is a bit less than the label.
