Overview
At 0.4 inches thick, the Maxone external hard drive uses an aluminum shell and USB 3.0 to give Windows PCs and laptops 500GB of slim, plug and play backup storage.
Maxone lists Windows 7, 8 and 10 compatibility specifically, with no mention of Mac support in the product's own specifications, so Windows users are the safer bet for this listing. The aluminum shell is pitched on running cooler and more quietly than a plastic enclosure, a reasonable claim for a mechanical drive rather than a promise that it resists drops.
- 500GB capacity
- 0.4 inch ultra-slim aluminum design
- USB 3.0 up to 5 Gbit/s
- 3-year warranty included
Who it's for
Suits Windows PC and laptop owners who want a slim, no-frills 500GB backup drive without paying for larger capacity they will not use. Mac users and anyone needing rugged, drop-resistant storage should look elsewhere.
Pros and cons
- Slim 0.4 inch aluminum body
- Plug and play, no external power needed
- USB 3.0 speed with USB 2.0 backward compatibility
- 3-year manufacturer warranty
- No listed Mac compatibility
- 500GB capacity is modest for large media libraries
Performance notes
Runs over USB 3.0 at speeds up to 5 Gbit/s while staying backward compatible with USB 2.0 ports, and needs no external power supply or driver install, just plug in and it is recognized. The aluminum body is built to run cool and quiet at 0.4 inches thick rather than to absorb drops.
