Counter Assault Bear Spray 10.2 oz

Overview

A 10.2 ounce canister of bear deterrent spray with a rated range of 44 feet and about 10 seconds of spray time, formulated with 2% capsaicin and EPA registered for use against grizzly, black and brown bears.

Counter Assault was developed with the University of Montana by a company founder who survived a grizzly bear encounter, and the spray is built around range and duration rather than a smaller, faster-draw format: 44 feet of reach and a 10 second spray gives more margin than a shorter-range canister. It carries a 4 year shelf life and a glow-in-the-dark safety wedge on a string tether so it can be found and armed quickly at night.

• 4 year shelf life
• Developed with the University of Montana
• Meets HFC Phasedown AIM Act requirements
• String-tethered glow-in-the-dark safety wedge

Who it's for

Fits hikers, campers and backcountry travelers in grizzly, black or brown bear range who want a long-range, EPA-registered deterrent for a hiking or survival kit. Less of a fit for someone who wants the smallest, lightest canister, since the range and spray duration here come with a larger 10.2 ounce size.

Pros and cons

Performance notes

Range and duration are what separate bear sprays in practice, since a longer reach and a longer spray window give more time to react if a bear closes distance. At 44 feet and roughly 10 seconds of spray, this canister is built to hold onto both, backed by a 2% capsaicin formula meant to work across bear species rather than one specific type.
