Newton Baby Essential Crib Mattress

Overview

A two-stage crib mattress from Newton Baby built around a Wovenaire breathe-thru core, sized 52 by 28 by 4 inches for infant use through the toddler years.

The core is an open, air-permeable material rather than solid foam, which is the mechanism behind the breathability claim, and both the cover and the core itself can be washed: the cover in a machine, the core rinsed in a shower or bath. It carries GREENGUARD Gold certification for low chemical emissions, a third-party air quality standard rather than a label the brand assigns itself.

• Wovenaire breathe-thru core made in the USA
• 52 x 28 x 4 inches
• GREENGUARD Gold certified
• 2-stage design, infant through toddler

Who it's for

Fits a standard crib and suits parents who want a mattress they can rinse clean after the spills and blowouts that come with infancy through toddlerhood. It is not the mattress for someone who wants a plush, soft-sleep feel, since it is built and marketed around firm, breathable support.

Pros and cons

Performance notes

The Wovenaire core is an open, woven structure rather than a solid foam block, which is what lets air move through it instead of trapping heat the way closed-cell foam can. Because the core itself can be rinsed rather than only spot cleaned, the mattress can be fully cleaned after the kind of spills a sealed foam mattress could not handle.
