Overview
A whole grain, veggie, and fruit dehydrated base mix from The Honest Kitchen, sold in a 7 lb box that the brand states makes about 28 lbs once rehydrated, meant to be combined with a protein the owner adds separately.
This is a base mix rather than a complete food, so an owner needs to add meat or another protein at each meal. It sits between from-scratch home cooking and packaged kibble, giving more control over protein choice without building a full recipe.
- 7 lb box makes about 28 lbs prepared
- Whole grain, fruit, and veggie base
- Preservative-free
- Protein added by the owner
Who it's for
Owners who want to home-cook for their dog with less planning than a from-scratch recipe, while still choosing their own protein source.
Pros and cons
- Expands to roughly four times its dry weight when rehydrated
- Lets the owner choose the protein source
- Requires adding protein separately, an extra shopping and prep step
- Not a complete standalone food as sold
Performance notes
Dehydration removes moisture without the high heat of extrusion cooking, which the brand markets as preserving more of the whole grain, fruit, and vegetable nutrients, and the 7 lb box expanding to roughly 28 lbs after rehydration means a smaller box stretches further than the dry weight suggests.
