Overview
A spinning hard disk inside a desktop enclosure, fed by its own power adapter, gives this Seagate drive its huge capacity. It connects over USB, mounts as a drive on Windows and Mac, and takes files by drag and drop.
One enclosure holds enough space for whole photo archives, video libraries or several computer backups. Its spinning disk and outlet power mean it lives on a desk and moves data at hard drive pace.
Who it's for
People with growing archives of photos, video or game files who want one big target for backups. Laptop users on the move should choose a portable drive.
Pros and cons
- Very large capacity
- Simple drag and drop use
- Data recovery service included
- Works with Windows and Mac
- Needs wall power
- Spinning disk speed
- Time Machine needs reformatting
- Warranty length not detailed in bullets
Performance notes
Throughput is set by the spinning disk, so large sequential copies run steadily while many small files move slower. The USB connection is not the bottleneck at these speeds. Recovery services cover data loss but not the time to rebuild a failed backup.
