Overview
PlayStation owners get an officially licensed portable hard drive that stores a big game library over USB. Older-generation PlayStation games launch straight from it, while current-generation games are archived and copied back to the console to play.
Licensed firmware and large capacity mean no more deleting and re-downloading games. As a mechanical drive, it is meant for storage, and current-generation titles cannot run from it directly.
Who it's for
PlayStation owners with large libraries get space to archive titles instead of deleting them. Players wanting to run current-generation games externally need a faster flash-based option.
Pros and cons
- Large game library storage
- Officially licensed for PlayStation
- Plays PS4 games directly
- Light and portable
- PS5 games must be copied back
- Mechanical drive, not flash storage
- Speed figures not listed
Performance notes
Transfer times depend on the spinning hard disk and the USB connection, so moving a large game back to the console takes a while. Older-generation games run from the drive, but load speed follows the mechanical disk.
