Overview
A family heading to the campground or ski slope gets a pair of Midland X-Talker radios with privacy codes, NOAA weather alerts and hands free voice activation. A desktop charger tops up both rechargeable packs.
Weather alerts and hands free talking suit outdoor groups who need to stay in touch. Real range is far below the headline figure in hills and woods, and the specs disagree on water resistance.
Who it's for
Campers, skiers and families at events will use the privacy codes and weather alerts. Teams that need loud, rugged business radios should look at UHF business models.
Pros and cons
- License free FRS
- Weather scan and alert
- Hands free eVOX
- Many privacy code combinations
- Headline range unrealistic in terrain
- Water resistance listed inconsistently
- Spec color differs from title
Performance notes
Range is governed by line of sight, so hills, trees and buildings cut it sharply. Privacy codes filter other users on the same channel but do not encrypt. Weather scan locks onto the strongest NOAA station automatically.
