Overview
LaCie wraps this Rugged Mini hard drive in its orange and grey shell built to take knocks, dust and rain on the road. It connects to Mac or PC over USB, and encryption guards the files against unauthorized access.
A large capacity in a toughened shell suits field work where bags get dropped and weather turns. The spinning disk and older USB link make big transfers slower than an SSD.
Who it's for
Students, travelers and field shooters who carry backups in a backpack suit it. Video editors cutting directly from the drive will want something faster.
Pros and cons
- Toughened shell resists shocks and rain
- Large capacity for photo and video
- Works on Mac and PC
- Encryption adds protection
- Spinning disk is slower than SSD
- No USB-C port listed
- Transfer speed figures not listed
Performance notes
Transfer speed is set by the spinning platters and the USB link, so large folders take longer than on flash storage. The rugged shell protects against drops, though a running hard disk is still more delicate than an idle one.
