La Crosse 704-1531B-INT Large Magnifying Easy Read 5-Inch Capacity Acrylic Rain Gauge in

Overview

A magnifying acrylic face enlarges the white markings against a dark background so the water level can be read from a distance. It mounts on a fence post, deck railing or the ground.

Easy reading from afar is the reason to choose it: the acrylic magnifies and the markings are white on dark. The limitation is that it records nothing and measures only to its stated scale.

Who it's for

Gardeners who check backyard rain by eye, and who want local readings instead of distant reports, will like the large scale. Anyone wanting alerts or history should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Performance notes

Rain collects in the tube, and the enlarged scale shows the depth at a glance. Readings reflect only the spot where it is mounted, which suits backyard measurement, and open placement away from overhangs gives truer totals.
