Overview
A new ham operator gets a Baofeng dual band handheld built to transmit only inside the ham bands, with spurious emissions tested for FCC compliance. It programs from the keypad or a PC with CHIRP and takes most classic Baofeng accessories.
Beginners get a compliant version of the classic Baofeng handheld that will not transmit outside the allowed ranges, plus its full feature set. It is not water resistant, and real range depends heavily on terrain and repeaters.
Who it's for
Licensed beginners, emergency kits and repeater users suit the dual band handheld. Hikers in heavy rain need a water resistant model.
Pros and cons
- Transmit locked to ham bands
- Programs with CHIRP
- Uses classic Baofeng accessories
- VOX hands-free transmit
- Not water resistant
- Range depends on terrain
- Programming cable not included
Performance notes
Range depends on antenna height, terrain and repeaters, which the listing notes extend contact over a large area. Compliance comes from limiting transmit to the listed bands with clean spurious emission.
