Overview
A desk next to a PC or Mac is where this Seagate drive belongs, adding storage through a USB cable and its own power adapter. It ships formatted exFAT, so both Windows and Mac read and write it immediately.
Cross platform exFAT formatting and included backup software make it easy to share one drive between a Windows PC and a Mac. Wall power and a spinning disk tie it to one desk.
Who it's for
Home users freeing space on an internal drive or consolidating files into one place. Mobile workers need a bus powered portable drive instead.
Pros and cons
- Works on Windows and Mac immediately
- Backup software included
- Data recovery service included
- Passive cooling, no fan
- Needs wall power
- Micro-B port, not USB-C
- Mechanical drive sensitive to bumps
Performance notes
The exFAT format lets both Windows and Mac use the drive without reformatting, though Mac backup tools may want their own format. Speed is governed by the internal hard disk, suited to storing files and backups. Passive cooling makes it silent apart from the disk itself.
