Overview
An off-roader or camper gets a GMRS handheld that talks to any radio on the same frequencies. Rugged Radios builds in NOAA weather channels, FM radio, a flashlight and an LCD screen, and it charges in a desktop cradle.
Compatibility with any GMRS handheld or mobile radio makes it easy to join a group convoy. Water resistance is not part of the spec, which matters on rainy trails or river crossings.
Who it's for
Trail rides, campsites and convoys where everyone runs GMRS radios. Paddlers and anyone out in heavy rain need a sealed radio instead.
Pros and cons
- Works with any GMRS radio
- Weather channels for emergencies
- Built-in flashlight and FM radio
- Charging cradle and AC adapter included
- Not water resistant
- Short listed talking range
Performance notes
Real range depends on terrain and line of sight, since UHF signals are blocked by hills, trees and buildings. The tuned antenna helps, but the listed maximum is a short distance, so open ground gives the longest reach.
