Overview
Keying up this BAOFENG handheld connects you on GMRS, directly or through a repeater, while the receiver also scans NOAA weather, UHF, VHF and airband. A rechargeable battery and flashlight are built in.
Repeater-capable GMRS plus weather and airband listening in one handheld is the reason to carry it. The range figure is an upper limit, and transmit power is missing.
Who it's for
Good for convoys, camps and emergency kits where weather alerts help. People needing licensed amateur bands or high power should look at other radios.
Pros and cons
- Repeater capable for longer reach
- Weather and airband receive
- CHIRP programming support
- Transmit power not listed
- Range claim is an upper limit
- Accessory fit limited to 5R series
Performance notes
Handheld range is set by antenna height and terrain, so hills and buildings cut it well below the headline figure. Repeaters extend reach by relaying from a high site.
