A huge-capacity desktop drive for backups and media libraries at home or in an office. It needs wall power and moves data at hard drive speeds, so it is not a portable or fast working drive.

Overview
Not a pocket drive, the Seagate Expansion Desktop is a large full size hard disk that runs from wall power. Plug it into a Windows or Mac computer by USB and drag files across, with Rescue data recovery included if something goes wrong.
Massive capacity for backups and media in one box makes it easy to keep a full archive at the desk. Hard disk speed and the need for a power adapter limit it to stationary use.
Who it's for
Photographers, families and small offices backing up years of files get lots of space in one unit. Travelers and video editors working directly off the drive will want a portable SSD.
Pros and cons
- Very large capacity
- Plug and play on Windows and Mac
- Data recovery service included
- Cable and power adapter in box
- Needs mains power
- Hard drive speeds, not SSD
- Time Machine needs reformatting
- Only one year warranty
Performance notes
Transfer speed is set by the spinning hard disk, which sustains steady sequential copies but falls behind flash storage for small files. The USB link has enough bandwidth that the drive itself is the limit.
