Best OverallA sound choice for wide doorways and the bottom of stairs when the opening matches one of its fit ranges. Measure first, since several widths between those ranges will not hold, and it must never go at the top of stairs.
A steel gate wide enough for most stair and doorway openings, with the auto-close and double-lock combination that makes it worth the extra step of measuring your space before ordering.
Popular Pick
A pressure mounted gate that blocks a doorway or the bottom of a staircase without drilling, and the walk-through door saves you from stepping over it all day. It only fits openings in the stated width range, so measure before ordering.
A practical space saving alternative to a bulky panel gate, strong for puppies and toddlers but worth reconsidering for large, physically pushy dogs.
A motorized, app controlled dog door that opens only for a collar on direct approach and bolts shut behind the pet. It works only with the matching High Tech Pet ultrasonic collar, so plan around that collar for every pet using it.
A strong answer for jumping cats that clear standard gates, with a door you can open one-handed from either side. Measure the frame width and ceiling height carefully, since a pressure mount needs a snug fit.

A listing appears only when it has a recorded price, a minimum customer rating, and enough ratings or monthly sales. Generic and unbranded listings are left out, while every real brand stays, including brands sold only on Amazon. The ones that pass are ordered by the ProductDome score, which weighs owner satisfaction, rating volume, demand and data quality.
Pet door and stair gates keep pets out of rooms, off stairs or inside safe areas, and on this page they range from pressure mounted gates and hardware mounted gates to extra tall gates and gates with small pet doors. The first decision is where the gate goes, because the top of stairs needs a hardware mounted gate screwed to the wall, while doorways can use pressure mounted gates.
Width and height are the next questions. Measure the opening and check the gate's width range and extensions. Tall gates suit jumpers and large dogs. Among the 6 products that list item weight, most fall between 6.3 and 15 pounds, and 11 pounds is typical.
Door features matter. Walk through doors with auto close and one handed opening are convenient, and a small pet door lets cats pass while keeping dogs out.
Gates with a low threshold are less of a trip hazard for people, and gates with an extra tall frame stop agile dogs from jumping over. Freestanding gates and pens suit open plan spaces where a gate cannot attach to walls. Some gates double as baby gates, so check the safety standards if you have both pets and young children.
Before buying, check the width range, height, mounting type, door features and extensions. Never use pressure gates at the top of stairs, and check the fit regularly.
