Best OverallAn affordable, strong-pigment craft acrylic that reviewers rate highly for coverage and ease of cleanup, especially for basecoating and kids' projects.
Popular PickA practical, low-mess paint format for young kids that dries fast and washes off easily, better suited to quick projects than detailed color work.
A straightforward, USA-made chalk paint built for the distressed-furniture look, with minimal prep needed before you start.
A well-rounded 24-color starter acrylic set with enough range and metallic shades to cover most beginner canvas, wood, and clay projects.
A practical 12-color starter kit for anyone customizing shoes or leather goods who needs paint that flexes without cracking.
A professional-grade opaque white with a top lightfastness rating, useful for flat coverage and color mixing wherever a transparent watercolor white would not do the job.

A practical bulk basecoat paint for wood and canvas projects, not a substitute for artist-grade pigment or a multi-color set.
A reasonable starter kit for varied small craft projects, less suited to anyone painting large canvases who needs bigger paint volumes.
A sound primary palette for mixing your own colors and a reasonable classroom pick, though buyers wanting a broad ready-mixed range should look at a larger Liquitex set instead.
A dependable single-color refill for basecoating and stencil work, best bought when you already know you need this exact brown.
A safety-certified single-tube gold metallic that covers well across common craft surfaces, worth buying alongside a base palette rather than on its own.
A complete 36-color starter kit with tools included, a solid value pick for anyone setting up a first acrylic painting station.
A reliable, brand-name entry point into watercolor for buyers who don't yet need professional-grade pigment.
A straightforward water-based black leather paint for small restoration or customization jobs on shoes and leather goods.
A dependable 12-tube starter set built on Liquitex's professional pigment grinding process, good value for a first acrylic kit rather than a replacement for a professional palette.
A solid single-tube white for artists who mix their own colors and burn through titanium white fastest.
A broad, low-cost starter set that covers most craft surfaces without needing separate paint for each one.

The score combines owner satisfaction, rating volume, demand and data quality from public Amazon listings (updated 5 days ago). We do not test products ourselves.
Apple Barrel, Winsor & Newton, FolkArt, Liquitex, Angelus lead this category among the 12 brands that passed our curation checks.
A listing appears only when it has a recorded price, a minimum customer rating, and enough ratings or monthly sales. Generic and unbranded listings are left out, while every real brand stays, including brands sold only on Amazon. The ones that pass are ordered by the ProductDome score, which weighs owner satisfaction, rating volume, demand and data quality.
Art paints come as individual colours and colour sets: individual colours let you build a palette around a particular project, while sets give you a starting palette that may include shades you rarely need. Before planning that palette, look for explicit suitability for your paper, canvas, wood or leather. The paint type filter includes Acrylic and Watercolor, but the label alone is insufficient for choosing paint for a particular surface or technique. For objects that will be handled, washed or kept outdoors, check the manufacturer’s suitability guidance and any curing or sealing requirements. Once suitability is clear, decide how much paint you need in each colour.
Use the item volume filter to narrow the amount you are buying. Among the 17 products that list item volume, most fall between 0.4 and 16 fl oz, and 2 fl oz is typical. For a large piece, check any manufacturer coverage guidance against your surface, application thickness and planned number of layers. Fluid volume alone cannot tell you how much area the paint will cover. Small quantities make sense for unfamiliar colours; larger quantities suit shades you already use regularly. A set with equal amounts of every colour may leave you replacing a background colour while accent shades remain largely unused. For sets, establish whether the stated volume applies to each container or the combined contents.
For layering, compare the stated transparency or opacity with your intended effect: transparent colour lets underpainting show through, while an opaque layer helps conceal it. For blending, check working-time guidance and the conditions it assumes, since drying conditions and application thickness affect how long you can manipulate the paint. For raised brush marks, look for a consistency described as retaining texture; a colour sample showing the shade will not tell you whether the paint holds those marks.
Before buying, read the preparation instructions for any required primer, and establish whether that primer or any specified protective finish or additive is compatible and supplied or sold separately. The size filter uses volume units, so consult actual container dimensions if storage clearance matters. If choosing a painting kit, inspect its contents list for brushes and painting surfaces, since the kit name does not tell you what is supplied. Check cleanup instructions before use, especially whether dried paint can be removed from brushes and work surfaces.
