Overview
This is the 2TB capacity of Western Digital's Elements Portable line, a plug and play external hard drive with USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps) connectivity for Windows and Mac.
Elements is WD's no-frills backup line, sold across capacities from around 1TB up past 6TB in the same small enclosure, and this listing is the 2TB point in that range. It skips WD's backup software and encryption features found on the pricier My Passport line, which keeps the price down for buyers who just want raw storage.
- 2TB capacity
- USB 3.2 Gen 1, 5Gbps
- Plug and play, no software
- Compatible with Windows and Mac
Who it's for
Good for anyone who wants extra storage for photos, documents or media without paying for software they will not use. Buyers who want automated backup scheduling or hardware encryption should look at WD's My Passport series instead.
Pros and cons
- Plug and play with no setup on Windows or Mac
- Small, lightweight enclosure for a 2TB drive
- USB 3.2 Gen 1 speed over USB 3.0
- No bundled backup software
- No hardware encryption included
Performance notes
Connects over USB 3.2 Gen 1 at up to 5Gbps and is recognized by Windows and Mac as soon as it is plugged in, with no driver install needed. As with any small portable enclosure, real-world transfer speed depends on the cable and port used rather than the rated bus speed alone.
