Overview
Western Digital's Elements Portable line reaches 5TB in this listing, still running over USB 3.2 Gen 1 for straightforward backup of photos, videos and files on Windows and Mac.
WD keeps the line simple by leaving out backup software and encryption, the features that separate it from the pricier My Passport series.
- 5TB capacity
- USB 3.2 Gen 1, 5Gbps
- Plug and play, no software install
- Compact portable enclosure
Who it's for
Large families of photos and video, or anyone building a backup buffer, are the target here; a bundled backup tool or encryption still means stepping up to My Passport.
Pros and cons
- Large 5TB capacity in a portable enclosure
- Quiet operation during sustained use
- Plug and play on Windows and Mac
- Included USB cable is reported to fail before the drive does
- No bundled backup or encryption software
- Price has risen compared to past years
Performance notes
Runs over USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps) and mounts automatically on Windows and Mac. Owners of this 5TB Elements drive report sustained transfer speeds in roughly the 90 to 135 MB/s range for large sequential copies, and describe it as quiet enough to forget it is running.
