Overview
A dorm room desk, a home office or a laptop bag is where this blue WD drive lives, holding backups of photos, music and documents. Hardware encryption and password protection lock the data, and backup software comes with it.
Encrypted backups in a slim aluminum case make it a dependable everyday drive for documents and photos. It ships with a USB-A cable only, so USB-C laptops need an adapter that is not in the box.
Who it's for
Suited to students and home offices that back up a laptop every week. Owners of laptops with only USB-C ports will need an adapter.
Pros and cons
- Hardware encryption with password
- Backup software included
- Works on USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports
- Very light for carrying
- USB-A cable, no USB-C adapter
- Mechanical drive, modest speed
- Write speed not listed
Performance notes
The mechanical drive sets the pace, so copying a large photo library takes time even over a fast USB port. Encryption is handled in the drive's hardware once a password is set, and the Acronis software runs the backups.
