Overview
Not a basic dual-band walkie, this BAOFENG transmits on three bands and listens across airband, FM broadcast and NOAA weather. An alphanumeric keypad lets you enter frequencies and names without a computer.
Field programming from the keypad plus one-key frequency copy makes team setup quick. The listing omits range and weight, and rain protection is absent.
Who it's for
Hams who want an extra band and the freedom to program on a trail suit this radio. Crews working in rain or dust should look at a sealed IP-rated model.
Pros and cons
- Three transmit bands
- Keypad entry without a PC
- Copies frequencies from other radios
- FM radio listening without interruptions
- Not water resistant
- Range not listed
- No published unit weight
Performance notes
Reach depends on the antenna, band choice and terrain, with higher ground helping more than anything else. The TX forbid mode turns the radio into a pure scanner so it cannot key up by mistake.
